birds of the family Tetraonidae, and subfamily Tetraoninae, inhabiting
Europe, Asia, and North America. They have plump bodies, strong,
well-feathered legs, and usually mottled plumage. The group includes
the ptarmigans (Lagopus), having feathered feet.
